Colin Sykes Foodstores has recently trialed a new security system at its store in Speke, Liverpool, designed specifically to deter young people from causing trouble near the store – and is hailing the results as remarkable.

Nisa-Today’s Group Services division organised the trial of the Mosquito system which is designed to be manually activated whenever a retailer fears he is at risk and emits a loud, high pitched siren of a frequency which can only be heard by people between their teens and 25 years of age. The sound is so unpleasant to its audience that they move away from the store.

The Mosquito siren can be heard up to 20 metres away and according to its manufacturers, is being repeatedly used by the police to disperse troublesome youths.

Peter Sykes, director of the 5,000 sq ft store explains, “We have a history of repeated problems with youngsters congregating outside our store, causing trouble and loitering around the outside of the shop front intimidating customers. When we tried to move them along, they became difficult and aggressive. We decided to trial the Mosquito system to see if it had an affect and the results really are amazing – it truly is an impressive piece of kit. All we do now is switch on the Mosquito unit and within ten minutes, the youths have gone away.”
