On Tuesday 6th November, the Nisa Local store on Creek Road at Meridian Point in Greenwich won a national award for its instore café.

The store was awarded ‘Best Food to Go’ retailer at the Asian Trader Awards – a national award ceremony affiliated to grocery trade magazine Asian Trader, which recognises excellence in independent retailing – for its Café Nisa. The Café offers its customers a wide selection of sandwiches, wraps, ready meals, biscuits and muffins.

The Awards, which were attended by an audience of over 1,000, featured a ‘crime theme’ and Mohammad Saleem who owns the Nisa Local with his wife, Farhana, addressed the audience for ten minutes about the problems that retail members have to face.

Mohammed and Farhana received the award from MP Tony McNutty, after judges bestowed the honour of ‘best food to go retailer’ to the Nisa Local for its Café Nisa’s ‘wonderful ambience and excellent products’. Asian Trader magazine commented: “In a highly innovative approach, their state of the art store features its very own café, designed to their unique concept where customers can relax with their favourite latte and halal wrap, or buy freshly prepared food to take home. With their Café Nisa concept, the Saleems have brought genuine excitement to this, their second convenience store.”

Mohammad Saleem added, “The instore café is something we have worked hard to develop, to ensure that it meets our customers’ needs and we’re absolutely delighted to have won this award – particularly after only being open since January this year. This accolade is testament to the commitment and dedication of all of our staff and the continued support of our customers - for which we are incredibly grateful.”

The Nisa Local store is a member of the national grocery buying group for independent retailers - Nisa-Today’s - which amalgamates the buying requirements of all of its members to drive down prices from suppliers and help truly independent stores compete against the national supermarket chains. And because Nisa-Today’s is a mutual, the Nisa Local store remains fully independent, meaning it can tailor its product range and services to meet its customers needs, whilst passing on significant price benefits to them through the buying power it receives through Nisa-Today’s membership.
