Nisa-Today’s Introduces a New Waste Packaging Programme

10/06/2010

Nisa-Today’s has recently introduced a new waste packaging programme at its chilled depot in Harlow which looks set to reduce the group’s environmental impact through reducing the carbon footprint of its operations and members’ stores.

At the beginning of 2010 Nisa-Today’s started trialling an initiative with the help of Environmental and Compliance Solutions (ECS), a business unit of logistics company DHL. This initiative saw the introduction of a store recyclable back-haul programme which involves the DHL Nisa fleet collecting cardboard and plastic from members’ stores following each delivery and then recycling this back at the depot.

After a successful initial trial the programme was trialled further at 20 stores during April. Following positive feedback from participating members this will now be extended to include any members within the M25 catchment area of Harlow at the beginning of July. Nisa-Today’s aims to offer this programme to any member being served directly from Harlow by the start of September and will introduce it in a phased programme to the company’s chill and frozen depot in Stoke later this year.

With the landfill charges increasing and with labour instore becoming more and more valuable, the store recyclable back-haul programme provides members with an easy recycling solution whilst also reducing their annual waste costs by up to 90%. This new initiative will be a great benefit to members and has already received excellent feedback from members participating in the trial.

Jonathan Stowe, Nisa’s Distribution director, commented: “We are beginning to exploit our new relationship with DHL and provide members with increased savings and extra benefits. This new initiative has so far received excellent feedback from members and the trial has been extremely positive. As well as providing members with brilliant savings it is also very beneficial for the environment. We look forward to extending this initiative to the rest of our members in the future.”
