29/04/2009

The Today’s Group has started 2009 well, showing positive trading figures and continued growth across its grocery, impulse, non-food and licensed categories. Today’s experienced its best trading performance for five years in 2008, but first quarter figures for 2009 show that it is out-performing the previous year.
Reporting its first quarter trading figures for 2009 Today’s announced an overall increase in volume of +13.6% year-on-year. Breaking the figures down, strong performers in the first quarter included the grocery category which showed an increase of +17.8% volume, whilst Impulse and non-food categories also continued to grow, up 13.9% and 5.7% respectively year-on-year.
The licensed category experienced particularly high levels of growth with figures showing it was up 23.6% volume, with beers the strongest individual performer within the category up 35.2%. Sales growth was also noted in cider at +4.6% and wine at +2.3% volume.
Today’s Group trading director Nick Barker commented: “To be experiencing such strong trading figures given the current economic downturn is particularly impressive and we are very pleased to be in such a positive position. We finished last year in a very strong position, our best for five years, and this quarter’s data is even more robust. We're delighted and confident that our next quarter will be as equally impressive.”
