Making A Difference – Locally Donates £10,000 to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal

18/01/2010

The Making A Difference – Locally (MADL) charity has donated £10,000 to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal to help the country’s relief efforts for the devastating earthquake which struck the country on Tuesday.

Appeals have been made by Bill Clinton, the United Nations' special envoy to Haiti, who has appealed for money to provide Haiti citizens with food, water and shelter throughout this difficult time. This £10,000 donation comes just days after MADL donated £25,000 to the Help for Heroes charity.

The MADL charity was formed in May 2008 with the intention of assisting more than 2000 independent retailers throughout the UK with raising money for their local communities.

The charity was created by Nisa-Today’s and Costcutter Supermarkets and the stores participating in the scheme are all members of Nisa-Today’s or independent retailers who are part of the Costcutter Supermarkets Group.

MADL Board committee member John Sharpe commented: “The £10,000 which MADL has donated will hopefully be of great use to the people of Haiti at this time. Rebuilding in the wake of such a catastrophic event will be difficult and nothing can fully repair the damage caused to its people’s lives, but we hope that through our support and the support of many other generous and sympathetic governments and organisations around the world, the country can begin to emerge from the shadow of this terrible disaster. Our deepest condolences go to those who have lost family, friends and loved ones in the earthquake.”

The charity works by a specified amount of the cost of certain products promoted instore being allocated to the retailer’s MADL charity fund. For instance, this month for every Rustlers Burgers sold in stores 3p of the sale will go into the retailer’s MADL fund to be donated to their chosen charity.
