The Making A Difference – Locally Charity is Celebrating its One Year Anniversary
16/06/2009

Nisa-Today’s has raised over £1 million as part of its Making A Difference-Locally (MADL) charity in its first year, which was created by Nisa-Today’s in association with Costcutter Supermarkets Group.
The MADL charity was created and launched in May 2008 to assist more than 2,000 independent retailers throughout the UK in helping their communities through donations to local charities and good causes. Independent retailers have the raised money through the sales of specific products instore and then saved the money raised in a virtual bank account which they can donate to worthwhile charities or good causes in the retailer’s local area. For example, for each Tetley Tea 240 bag pack purchased in store, 4p of the sale will go into the retailer’s MADL fund to be donated to their chosen charity. Over the course of the year over 140 local charities and good causes have benefited from MADL including Scunthorpe-based charities, Lindsey Lodge Hospice, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Scunthorpe General Hospital and the Kay Travis Dance Group.
John Sharpe, managing director of Central Distribution Services & Logistics at Nisa-Today’s, commented, “We are pleased that we have been able to donate money to the Scunthorpe community through the Making A Difference-Locally charity. Making A Difference – Locally was established to help independent retailers, however we agreed that a percentage of the total amount raised would be used to support charities and good causes close to Nisa-Today’s. Many of our employees are from the Scunthorpe area and we give them the opportunity to nominate a charity or good cause within their local communities. We have donated money to over 20 charities in the Scunthorpe area alone and we’re hoping to continue donating money through MADL to the local community.”
In addition to the scheme, both Nisa and Costcutter have continued their long-term commitment to supporting national good causes. Over the years the Nisa and Costcutter have donated a significant amount to charitable organisations that exist to make a difference to the lives, opportunities and prospects of people across the UK.
