Local Retailer Donates Money to Friends of Ramshaw

16/02/2010

Local retailer, Evenwood Village Stores of Shirley Terrace, Evenwood, Bishop Auckland, has donated £385 to local good cause Friends of Ramshaw. The funds will be used to take the Ramshaw Primary School reception class on a trip to Newcastle to see an array of dinosaur fossils to help further develop the children’s knowledge on dinosaurs.

Evenwood Village Stores has been raising money for its local community through the sale of specific products in store and has been able to donate the money raised for the good cause with the help of the charity Making A Difference – Locally (MADL). The MADL charity was formed in May 2008 with the intention of assisting more than 2,000 independent retailers throughout the UK with raising money for their local communities. The charity works by a specified amount of the cost of certain products promoted instore being allocated to the retailer’s MADL charity fund. For instance, this month for every Pilgrims Choice, farmhouse mature cheese 400g pack purchased in store, 5p of the sale will go into the retailer’s MADL fund to be donated to their chosen charity.

The charity was created by Nisa-Today’s and Costcutter Supermarkets and the stores participating in the scheme are all members of Nisa-Today’s or independent retailers who are part of the Costcutter Supermarkets Group.

Trevor Hutchinson, owner of Evenwood Village Stores, commented, “We are thrilled to make this donation to Friends of Ramshaw. Evenwood is a very close community so it is important that we help out as much as we can. We recently donated £250 to Friends of Evenwood and £150 to the Evenwood Cricket Club and we plan to make many more donations in the future.”

Dominic Brown, head teacher of Ramshaw Primary School, commented, “We are immensely grateful to everyone at Evenwood Village Stores for their very kind gesture. It has always been a hallmark of Evenwood that a small village community like ours can be so incredibly supportive. Being a small rural school, it can often be difficult to arrange and pay for transport so our children can experience the huge range of galleries, museums and events that the North-East has to offer. This kind donation makes it possible to take our children even further afield. We plan to put the very kind donation towards taking our little reception class through to Newcastle to see dinosaur fossils and perhaps to meet a Tyrannosaurus Rex! Once again, to everyone involved a very big thank you from the staff, parents and children of Ramshaw Primary School.”
