Local retailer J & C Stores of Biverfield Road, West Wylam, Prudhoe, has donated £500 to local charity Birtley Rotary Club, which will use the funds to purchase dictionaries for every child who is leaving primary school to move on to secondary school later this year. Each dictionary holds an inscription page with the child’s name providing a unique gift for every child.
J & C Stores has been raising money for its local community through the sale of specific products in store and has been able to donate the money raised for the charity with the help of the charity Making A Difference – Locally (MADL). The MADL charity was formed in May 2008 with the intention of assisting more than 2,000 independent retailers throughout the UK with raising money for their local communities. The charity works by a specified amount of the cost of certain products promoted instore being allocated to the retailer’s MADL charity fund. For instance, this month for every Rustlers Burger purchased in store, 3p of the sale will go into the retailer’s MADL fund to be donated to their chosen charity.
The charity was created by Nisa-Today’s and Costcutter Supermarkets. The stores participating in the scheme are all members of Nisa-Today’s or Costcutter Supermarkets.
Harry Jagpal, store owner, commented, “We decided to donate this significant sum of money to the Birtley Rotary Club because of the fantastic work it does for the local community. It helps a wide spectrum of the community ranging from school children right through to the elderly. The local community offers us great support throughout the year and the MADL charity allows us to show our appreciation and give something back. We look forward to making further donations in the future through the MADL charity.
